Stand-up for Academics
October 14, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Dr Sharon Andrews will run a session on the theories of comedy, how comedians generate material, some examples of comedians in action and activities to get them brainstorming comedy material. This session is intended to inspire teaching academics with new ideas for their own teaching performances.
For those of you who don’t know me, I am a fulltime GUSS academic by day and a part-time stand-up comedian at night. Doing comedy has been a lot of fun, but it has also been beneficial in my academic work.
I am keen to run a basic comedy session for GUSS lecturers/researchers who are interested in using humour as an engagement tool. A two-hour workshop to detail theories and ideas about what makes us laugh. This workshop will draw on the Benign Violation Theory developed by Dr Peter McGraw and the Arthur Asa Berger’s 45 techniques of comedy. The session will give you an opportunity to practice writing humour into your work and getting some feedback.
