Trimming videos on your smart devices


The easiest form of video editing is to simply trim the start and end from a video that you have recorded yourself.

This can be done on most smart phone devices and computers. Watch these videos for a detailed demonstration of how to trim videos on your Apple and Android smart phones

Trimming videos on your computer


Watch this video demonstrating how to trim videos on a computer, using QuickTime Player.

Trimming is the simplest way to edit on your computer.

  • Open the file you wish to trim in QuickTime Player.
  • Open the "Edit" menu and select "Trim".
  • This will open the editor and you can then select where you would like your video to start and finish and click "Done".
  • You will need to save the video as a new file.

Editing using iMovie on a Mac


If you have multiple clips that you would like to edit together, then editing software is required.

iMovie is a basic movie editor and is available on most Apple devices, including Apple laptops, computers, iPads and iPhones.

Editing using Kdenlive on a PC


If you have a PC computer, there is a great editing program called Kdenlive.

This program is available for a PC, Mac and Linux computers and and is available to download for free.

This editing program is quite complex, and may take some time to learn, however the below tutorials provide an overview of how to use the basic functions you will need to complete your videos.

Editing using Adobe Premiere Rush CC


  • Adobe Premiere Rush CC is available on iOS, macOS and Windows. This editing software is simple to use, and caters towards various social media platforms. Rush can be accessed by RMIT University staff and students through the Adobe Creative Cloud.

    The College of Business have developed some great resources for using Adobe Rush. The video tutorial describes how to set up your project and sync it to the cloud, ready to edit on multiple devices

Accessing Adobe Creative Cloud


  • Staff

    RMIT University Staff can access the Adobe Creative Cloud by visiting the Adobe website. Download the Adobe Creative Cloud desktop application by clicking on this link. Open the program and you will be prompted to "Sign in". Use your RMIT email address and press "continue". It will then ask you to select your "Personal Account" or "Company or School Account". Select "Company or School Account". This will direct you to an RMIT University login, enter your RMIT University credentials and then you will be logged in to Adobe.

    Once you have installed the Adobe Creative Cloud installer, open the program and you will be able to download any applications you desire from the "Apps" tab. For more information visit the Software for Personal Devices page.

    Students

    Students who have access to Adobe Creative Cloud through their course will be able to login similarly to staff members as described above. Students will need to use your student login credentials when logging in to Adobe.

    Unfortunately, Adobe Creative Cloud is no longer available through MyDesktop.

    Students can purchase the Adobe Creative Cloud through RMIT On The Hub.
