Building the online classroom with discussion boards
The beginning of any course represents a critical opportunity to establish a course culture and form habits for how people will engage throughout the semester. Many of the students in Kent Goldsworthy’s online course Social and Political Theory haven’t studied online before, so Kent is very clear that online doesn’t mean self-paced or distance ed. He encourages students to, “Think of the discussion boards as the classroom.”
What's the course about?
The course offers an overview of major theoretical and political debates essential for postgraduate studies in the Social Sciences. The course places strong emphasis on linking theoretical debates to practical examples and dilemmas, and introduces students to a range of basic postgraduate writing and research skills and conventions.
