How to: Get started with Canvas for sessional staff

Instructure Canvas

Recently we travelled to Singapore and Hong Kong to deliver training we’d developed for sessional and support staff teaching RMIT programs. The training comprised a three hour, face-to-face, hands-on session covering the following canvas functions:

  • Post an announcement
  • Respond to a discussion post
  • Send and respond to a message
  • Upload a document
  • Edit a page
  • Add a calendar event
  • Grade an assignment using:
    1. Turnitin
    2. Speedgrader (group assignment)
    3. Direct enter grades into gradebook
  • Mute and release grades
  • Extend an assignment due date

It was supported by a series of short pre-training activities designed to demonstrate Canvas functionality from a student perspective, and post-training follow-up answers to questions that arose in the sessions.

The following short screencasts and step-by-step instructions were developed to support the training but the content is relevant to any sessional staff member. In some instances the content is designed to be worked through in conjunction with a Canvas training course. To follow along you can either use your own sandbox site or, if you wish, you can contact us and we’ll add you to our training site so you can work through the original content.
