How to: Structure your content in Canvas

What are the options for structuring content in Canvas?

In Canvas, content can be organised using files, pages or modules, or a combination of these.

Features:

  • You can upload files to various places in your site (e.g. Discussions, Assignments, Pages, Quizzes, Files) and everything gets stored in the course Files tool.
  • Pages allow you to create a single page of content which can include a variety of media types as well as links to files and other sections of the course, or can be configured to act as a collaborative, wiki-style space for coauthoring material. Pages can be gathered together into Modules to present a sequence of related content.
  • Modules allow you to build pages, files and other Canvas tools such as discussions, quizzes, and assignments into a single cohesive learning journey using modules. You can arrange your site by weeks, units, chapters, topics or whatever organisational device makes sense for your content and your students.
  • RMIT has a number of course templates available for download from the Canvas Commons to assist you with your course structure.
