How to create a QR code with Google URL Shortner

Educational TechnologyLeave a Comment

Last week we showed you Andrew Robinson’s work creating videos and uploading them into Youtube playlists, and then printing QR codes to link to those videos.

Here’s a very quick video instruction on how to generate those QR codes using Google URL Shortner, and how to print them to an appropriate size.

Apologies for the orientation of my screen, the key steps are:

  1. Sign in to Youtube and go to your Playlists.
  2. Copy the link to the playlist you want
  3. Open Google URL shortener and sign in with the Google account you want to manage all these links with.
  4. Paste the link to your playlist and click “shorten URL”
  5. Click on “Details” and right click the image of the QR code and save the image to your computer. Name the file the same as your playlist.
  6. When you have all your QR codes on your computer, open them in your image viewer and open the print dialog. Select “contact sheet” or equivalent, to get all your code images small and on the one sheet of paper.
  7. When you have stuck all your QR codes in the locations you want them to be scanned from, users will need a QR scanner application on their phone. Google Googles is a useful application.
  8. Each time someone scans your code and clicks the link through to your playlist, Google URL Shortener will record the click through statistics.
